It was one of "those" nights in Bern Township early Saturday. It all started with a call for a vehicle accident on Cross Keys Road near Rickenbach Lane. Greenfields and Leesport Fire Companies were dispatched for a report of an accident with unknown injuries. As more information arrived at the Berks County Communcations Center, the incident was upgraded to and accident with injuries and entrapment, which added Mount Pleasant and Temple Fire Companies for rescue operations.

Firefighters arrived and found a heavily damaged car that struck a tree off Cross Keys Road after travelling at an apparent high rate of speed. The driver of the car had been ejected and the passenger was heavily trapped and injured badly.

Firefighters and Schuylkill Valley EMS personnel extricated the injured passenger and quickly transported him to the hospital. Tragically, the driver of the vehicle did not survive the impact and ejection.

Cross Keys Road was closed for over three hours until the scene was cleared.

A very ugly reminder of the carnage caused by high speed impact crashes.

And this was only the beginning....
