A major crash involving five vehicles occurred on the southbound lanes of Route 222 near the Bern/Spring Township line. One person was fatally injured and four others were injured as a result of the crash.

Police stated that the crash was caused by a driver traveling north in the southbound lanes of Route 222.

The crash which was originally dispatched as Spring Township involved entrapment in two vehicles. Both victims were extricated from their vehicles by crews from Spring Township and Wyomissing Fire Departments. The Western Berks Fire Department also assisted with scene clean-up. 

Traffic was tied up for miles around the incident. Fire Police from more than a dozen fire companies assisted with traffic conrol at numerous locations due to this incident.

Route 222 southbound was closed for several hours while police investigated.
