Crews from Greenfields, Mount Pleasant, West Reading and Spring Township were dispatched to a reported kitchen fire in the 500 block of Martin Ave in Greenfields.

Deputy Chief Brian Fisher arrived to find a working fire in the kitchen of two-story, wood frame residence. The owner of the house had knocked down the majority of the fire using a garden hose. Firefighters finished extinguishing the fire, then checked for extension and ventilated the structure.

The fire which apparently started in a malfunctioning appliance caused an estimated $70,000 in fire and smoke damage to the residence,.
