Tuesday, April 13, 2010 09:52 - A 1 1/2" gas main was struck while construction crews were digging along Woodward Drive to install a new water main. Once the main was struck, workers immediately abandoned their equipment and evacuated the area. Construction crews then blocked the adjacent driveways and street to keep all vehicles clear of the area.
Bern Township Police also evacuated one resident from her apartment unitl UGI arrived and shut off the main.
The main was shut off and remaining gas dissipated after approximately 30 minutes. Th evacuated apartment was checked by UGI and determined to be free of gas fumes. UGI then declared the entire area safe and released Greenfields and Mount Pleasant Fire Companies.
Th Woodward Apartment complex is undergoing an expansion project which requres an upgrade of the current water main.
