Saturday, February 13, 2010 12:45 - Greenfields, Bernville, Western Berks and Spring Township Fire Departments assisted Mount Pleasant Firefighters with a structure fire at the Blue Marsh Canteen on Bernville Road in Penn Township.
The staff of the restaurant called 911 to report the building filling with smoke. Mount Pleasant Quint 30 arrived first and found a fire burning behind wood siding on an exterior wall on the C side of the building. Mount Pleasant Deputy Chief Rich Burkey assumed Incident Command and ordered Greenfields Engine 55 to stretch an attack line to the C side of the building. Firefighters quickly removed the wood siding and extinguished the visible fire.
Bernville Chief Larry Rentschler, who was in charge of the fire attack, ordered the remainder of the exterior wall cut, as well as the adjacent interior wall dismanlted, to check for hidden fire extension. Bernville and Western Berks Firefighters performed the overhaul operation and found no more hidden fire. Firefighters also vented smoke from the building.
Spring Towship Fire Department also responded as a Rapid Intervention Team.
Firefghters were on the scene for about 90 minutes.
